DummySmtp

Email is an integral part of most web applications, but also can be one of the most difficult parts to test or account for when developing and testing.

DummySmtp is your answer. DummySmtp comes in two flavors:

Desktop Edition

The desktop edition of DummySmtp, known as Papercut, features a simplified SMTP server designed to only receive messages (not to send them on) with a GUI on top of it allowing you to see the messages it receives. It is ideal for you development environment and allows you to test email sending functionality and to view the messages to verify formatting/layout.

Papercut is an open sourced Windows application and available on Codeplex.

Web Edition

The web edition of DummySmtp is geared to staging environments. Have a staging site running a backup of your production database? Want to test something involving emails, but not have them go out to end users? DummySmtp Web Edition provides an SMTP server and credentials, where similar to the desktop, it only receives messages and allows you to view them through a web interface.

The Web Edition is available for free. Messages are only retained for two (2) hours.
